Do you feel stuck sometimes? Are you ready to get unstuck?
Are you ready to be brave?
In October of 2015, we had our first Being Brave retreat at the beautiful Caol Ait retreat center in Clifton, Virginia. On March 17th, we will gather there again to explore a new way of thinking about being brave. This retreat was originally scheduled for March 24, but I decided to change it because of a variety of conflicts (FCPS Spring Break, March for our Lives in D.C., etc.)
Each time I gather a new group of friends together to explore the fear that keeps us stuck, I walk away amazed at the inspiration, encouragement and transformation found in the powerful words “me too.” We find out that the lies we hear from our inner critic are surprisingly similar, although we thought we were the only one. As we share our stories and our hearts, we find out we are not the only one who struggles. As we learn new skills and strategies for combatting those fears, we turn up the volume on God’s voice and turn down the volume of the voices that keep us stuck.
To help us understand the building blocks of being brave, we will look through the lens of a BRAVE acronym: Bold, Resilient, Authentic, Vulnerable, Engaged and Empowered. Our theme verse for the day is found in 2 Timothy 1:7:
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Although God has given us all we need to be brave, many of us forget and find ourselves stuck in discouragement, fearfulness and inaction. We play it safe when God wants us to be bold and we hide from one another when God wants us to live in community. Being brave is our inheritance as children of God and being brave is the path to a life of meaning, purpose and adventure.
