“How dare we talk about joy when the world is such a mess and justice for so many feels so far away?”

This was my first response when my community told me they wanted to talk about joy way back in June 2020. But I had asked how I might serve them better, so I decided to dig deeper into the concept of joy. Turns out, joy is what enables us to show up in the world and keep fighting for goodness, mercy, grace, and justice. During that time, I discovered “The Book of Joy” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama- two men that have been fighting for justice, goodness, and love their whole lives, in some cases, through seemingly insurmountable obstacles. I discovered my favorite quote about joy in those pages (the second slide.) As I researched the tenants and pathways to this experience of joy these holy men taught, I realized joy AND sorrow are what happens when you let the world impact you on a heart level. Laughter AND tears. All of it. And in order to build resilience for the hard times, we simply must be willing to lay down our cynicism and cultivate, investigate, activate, celebrate and instigate joy.

With that said, I’m thrilled and honored to be speaking along with three other women at our 4th annual Claim it conference next Saturday at my beloved @florisumc For those who follow me who are a bit “church phobic” these days (understandably so) know that Floris is a safe space (5th slide.) Headed home after a beautiful week in Maui. So lucky to get to tag along once again while Steve attends an airport conference in one of my favorite places on earth. ♥️♥️♥️

I won’t bore you with a bunch of pictures, but this one is my favorite. This morning I took one more walk through Dragon’s Teeth Labyrinth just as the sun was rising. As I walked, I heard the invitation to “slow down and pay attention.” So I did. Perhaps that’s a good message to take into 2023, so I will carry it with me to the mainland. Today the founder of @momsdemand and one of my personal heroes @shannonrwatts announced that she will be stepping down as leader of our organization at the end of the year. While I am personally sad about this news, I’m happy for Shannon and her family. I’m also excited to see what comes next for her. (Representative or Senator Shannon Watts sounds pretty good IMHO)😍😍😍

Shannon’s story is an inspiration because it reminds us of the power of one person saying “NO, not on my watch!” and then tenaciously, resolutely, fiercely refusing to give up, even when it seems like nothing is changing. After 10 years of her leadership, the face of the gun violence prevention movement has completely transformed, one person, one call, one post, one tweet, one letter, one rally, one day at a time. As she says, “hope is a decision.” There is still much work to be done, but Shannon has built a powerful grassroots movement that will continue until our country is safer for all of us. I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to meet her a couple of times and that I could be there in the Senate chambers with her the day the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was passed. Thank you, Shannon for your leadership, your tenacity, your example, and your fierce resolve.
