A wonderful night at the @alexandriavadems Rock the Blue Dinner tonight with some of my @momsdemand action squad and tons of my fellow Alexandrians. It was a room full of my favorite kind of people: folks who care about our world and believe it is their responsibility to get involved in making the world a better place. People who truly believe in serving their communities. Plus we all looked so pretty in our blue 💙💙💙

Especially loved talking to and hearing from our keynote speaker Representative Jamie Raskin @repraskin Representative Raskin and I actually worked together YEARS ago when we were both in our 20s. In 1989-1990, we both worked for a time for Rev.Jesse Jackson and the National Rainbow Coalition. He was general counsel and I was an addiction counselor for Rev.Jackson’s “Down with Dope, Up with Hope” campaign. I wish I had pictures of those days, but this was before cell phones! Anyway, Representative Raskin brought down the house tonight with his inspirational words. It was a privilege to have a brilliant constitutional law professor talk about issues our lawmakers are wrestling with currently, including gun violence and the debt ceiling. He is definitely a national treasure and I’m fired up to keep working to elect more folks like him. Next weekend, June 2-4, is Wear Orange weekend and

Next weekend, June 2-4, is Wear Orange weekend and National Gun Violence Awareness Day. People all over the country will be gathering to honor victims and survivors of gun violence and recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to fight this uniquely American public health crisis.

Here in Alexandria, we will be hosting a family friendly remembrance rally in Market Square in Old Town on Friday evening June 2nd at 7:00 pm. We will have a variety of speakers including gun violence survivors, poet laureate of Alexandria, @studentsdemand leaders, and elected leaders including Mayor Wilson, Fairfax County BOS Chairman McKay, and Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano. We will also have activities for the kids.

Our team is working hard on this event and we would love to have you join us if you are local. If not, text ORANGE to 644-33 to find an event near you. It would be impossible to over estimate the impact

It would be impossible to over estimate the impact this brilliant, brave, powerful, deeply loving woman has had on my life. I’ve learned so much from her about what it looks like to live and love with your whole self. She is the most deeply authentic person I’ve ever met. Brooke loves with eyes, heart, and arms open wide, even though it occasionally hurts. I’ve never seen anything braver in my life. She is a force of nature, a brilliant writer and artist, regularly makes me snort laugh, and is a sensitive tender soul who makes everyone feel special. I’m privileged to know her, much less be her mom. Being her and her sister’s mom has been the greatest joy of my life.
