Today is the first Sunday in Advent, the beginning

Today is the first Sunday in Advent, the beginning of the liturgical year in my Christian faith tradition. We read these words as part of the worship service this morning during a time when we declare in community what we believe- our Affirmation of Faith. My eyes filled with tears as I read these words aloud because they just felt so RIGHT.

We’ve been church shopping for most of 2023, looking for a faith community to call home here in Alexandria. I have some complicated feelings about “church” after the last few years and I wondered if there would be a place for us; a place that shares our values and where we might have something to offer. For the last few months, I’ve felt drawn to one particular church based on the types of programming they offer, the incredible choir and music selections (I’m eager to start singing again!) and the ways they serve the community and the world. Today, when we read these words, something clicked and I knew it was time to commit, to invest, to open my heart again. THIS, these words, beautifully encapsulates what I believe and how I want to live in community with others. I believe in a faith that takes me “beyond the safe place; into action, into vulnerability, and into the streets.”

Advent is my favorite for a myriad of reasons. The sparkling lights, the familiar music we only listen to in December, the anticipation of the familiar story of our faith. And mostly, because we once again choose HOPE. In a world filled with darkness, we choose to believe the light will ultimately win. As a discipline, as a decision, as a habit, and as a crazy, reckless, vulnerable leap of faith- we choose hope. “We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell, O come to us, abide in us, our Lord Emmanuel.” 🎄🎄🎄 Happy Advent friends! #adventreflections #ocomeocomeemmanuel #faithcommunity #oldtownalexandria #oldpresbyterianmeetinghouse @opmh_church

Please join me in congratulating our brilliant daughter Brooke on this outstanding milestone! Today Brooke received her Master of Arts in Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. We couldn’t be prouder of the resilience, passion for her art, courage, and hard work today’s ceremony represents. We think Brooke is a uniquely talented writer and apparently others agree! We can’t wait to see what comes next. So, so proud of you @brookejohnson37 and wish we could be there with you today to celebrate! This revolutionary series from @verybigworldent teaches kids about climate solutions so they can feel empowered to make a difference! THIS SHOW IS EVERYTHING OUR KIDS NEED: informative, inspiring, and emotional, and I can’t wait for you to see it. And there are ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT TO GIVE!

It doesn’t matter whether there is a R or D after their name- when you vote, it HAS to be for people who support common sense gun reform.

You CANNOT vote for someone who doesn’t explicitly support gun reform and think they will be able to be convinced. They will not. There is too much money and power compelling them NOT to change their mind. It won’t happen.

Spoiler alert: the gun sense candidate on your ballot will be a Democrat. Make your peace with that now. So far, Republicans will not support even BASIC gun reform even though most Americans support it.

Consequences at the ballot box are the ONLY way things will change.

Vote for gun reform. You can always find your gun sense candidate at gunsensevoter.org Virginia friends, that means now through November 7th.

It’s the only way this madness will end.
