Next weekend, June 2-4, is Wear Orange weekend and

Next weekend, June 2-4, is Wear Orange weekend and National Gun Violence Awareness Day. People all over the country will be gathering to honor victims and survivors of gun violence and recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to fight this uniquely American public health crisis.

Here in Alexandria, we will be hosting a family friendly remembrance rally in Market Square in Old Town on Friday evening June 2nd at 7:00 pm. We will have a variety of speakers including gun violence survivors, poet laureate of Alexandria, @studentsdemand leaders, and elected leaders including Mayor Wilson, Fairfax County BOS Chairman McKay, and Commonwealth Attorney Steve Descano. We will also have activities for the kids.

Our team is working hard on this event and we would love to have you join us if you are local. If not, text ORANGE to 644-33 to find an event near you. It would be impossible to over estimate the impact

It would be impossible to over estimate the impact this brilliant, brave, powerful, deeply loving woman has had on my life. I’ve learned so much from her about what it looks like to live and love with your whole self. She is the most deeply authentic person I’ve ever met. Brooke loves with eyes, heart, and arms open wide, even though it occasionally hurts. I’ve never seen anything braver in my life. She is a force of nature, a brilliant writer and artist, regularly makes me snort laugh, and is a sensitive tender soul who makes everyone feel special. I’m privileged to know her, much less be her mom. Being her and her sister’s mom has been the greatest joy of my life. For Mother’s Day this year, I don’t need flowe

For Mother’s Day this year, I don’t need flowers, I need ALL our kids to come home safe. We are gathering all over the country today to demand Congress reinstate the Bipartisan Assault Weapons Ban. Grateful to my representatives @repdonbeyer @senatorwarner and @timkaine for co-sponsoring legislation that will save lives. If your legislators are not on board yet, text FED UP to 644-33 and demand they act!!

Grateful to the many people we chatted with at our local farmers market this morning who are ready to advocate for changes that will keep our community safer. Also grateful to those who thought they disagreed but stopped to chat. In most cases, we find we agreed on more than we disagreed on. The only exception was one man whose words haunt me. When I asked him what he thought about the fact that firearms are the #1 cause of death for children and teens only in the US, he said “I guess that is just the cost of freedom.” I just do not believe that is true and I, for one, can’t live with that trade off, can you?

COACHES HAVE COACHES!

Several months ago, I was frustrated by a number of things related to my physical health and my doctor referred me to this wonderful nutrition and health coach, Inez! Today was my 3 month assessment with her and I CRUSHED my goals. 💪🏼 Here is what my coach Inez (@fitnez) gave me that I couldn’t do for myself:
✅Expertise- she has years of training, certifications, and experience in nutrition and wellness. I do not! Too much info on the internet just left me confused, frustrated, and stuck. And feeling ashamed I couldn’t figure it out myself.
✅Accountability- she held me accountable to the plan we developed together with regular check ins. ALL of us do better with accountability.
✅Structure & problem solving- she taught me tangible skills, strategies, and hacks AND helped me problem solve when life threw me a curveball (broken toe 😫) Life always throws curveballs 😄
✅Encouragement- she was my biggest cheerleader as I made changes and started making progress. Someone else seeing and acknowledging your hard work is motivational!!

She is an awesome coach and I just signed up for 3 more months of coaching!!

So why am I telling you all of this? This week is International Coaching Week and I share my story to underscore the power of this process. This is what good coaches do. In my case, my expertise and passion is emotional wellness and self-leadership. I’ve spent over 35 years investing in training, degrees, certifications, research AND experience in the emotional wellness field and my clients inspire me every single day with their stories of transformation. Bottom line, we don’t ever have to struggle alone. Asking for help, investing in ourselves, is one of the bravest things we will ever do!! Last weekend, we ran away to the beach with dear f

Last weekend, we ran away to the beach with dear friends. Halfway there, I realized I forgot my charger for my computer. Although I didn’t schedule any clients for our time away, I did plan to work on some of the big events we have coming up in the advocacy work I do. I felt a little panicky, worried that not having my computer was a BIG DEAL. Turns out, once I got there, I remembered that the world continues to turn, good work continues to be done, the fight for justice marches on, even when I take a few days off to breathe deeply and stare at the ocean. Obviously, any other belief is frankly a tiny bit arrogant. I am not indispensable and neither are you. Work is good, whatever “work” looks like for you. And Sabbath -resting and recharging- is equally good. Let’s not forget to pause, take a breath, reconnect to gratitude, and do nothing every once in a while.
