One of the profound mysteries of our Christian faith is celebrated today on the day we call Good Friday. I read this scripture this morning and then looked it up in The Message translation:
1 Peter 2:21-25 (The Message)
21-25This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step.
He never did one thing wrong,
Not once said anything amiss.
They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.
By His wounds, we are healed. I love how The Message says “He used His servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way.” As I mentioned in my last post, the example Jesus sets for us in being a servant is really resonating with me right now. I love that Jesus has set us free to be servants and that our wounds, our brokenness, our frailty can be used to bring healing to others. Nothing is wasted in God’s Divine Economy (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) By His wounds, we have been healed. His wounds become my healing…set free to love, I can be used for the healing of another. The Kingdom of God on earth, Amen.
It is a Good Friday.
When Eugene Peterson was asked if The Message was a paraphrase or translation he said he believed it to be a contemporary translation. I love how he works hard to take a meaning for meaning approach as he tries to communicate the koine (common) Greek to us in plain (common) English!
