As I have mentioned before, I have a fantasy football team. I began playing fantasy football a couple of years ago after I watched from the sidelines during my husband’s first season the year before and fell in love with the game. My brother started a league in his neighborhood in 2006 and graciously allowed my sister and I to join in the fun. So, here is the news flash: last night, I WON the championship of my league!!!
Yes, Hot Lips Houlihan…this year’s team names are 70s TV show characters…beat Bionic Woman last night for the championship! The best part is that Bionic Woman’s team owner is my very competitive sister, Karen. Karen, who does crazy things like train for marathons and teach exercise classes that last for an hour and a half and begin with a WARM-UP of a 2 mile run, does not like to lose at anything. There is not one single sporting event where I could even remotely compete with her. So it is extremely fun to beat her in fantasy football! AND, rumor has it, I get a trophy! Considering that I would cry when we played dodge ball in P.E. and once got knocked out cold playing Red Rover (seriously, I did,) I do not have many trophies. Ok, I actually do have ONE trophy, but it involved a contest in a bar for a sorority charity competition in college and I only won cause Steve put the most money in the jar that determined the winner. And I am NOT telling you what it says on it. Let’s just say that, should I enter that contest today, I would NOT win it.
Anyway, back to my trophy for a pseudo athletic event. How cool is that? And here is another fun thing about it; I barely made it into the playoffs. My season record was only 6-7, but I was still one of the best 8 teams in the league…barely. Under the heading of irony of ironies, I beat Bionic Woman last night primarily because of the spectacular performance of one DeAngelo Williams who she traded to me in Week 9. With the advice of my General Manager of Personnel (Steve,) I countered a trade offer Karen made with one that Steve advised me might just win me the championship. Karen, who was leading the league all season, had a bench full of spectacular players and she wanted my Brian Westbrook…the only player I had that scored any points. I said no at first, but Steve encouraged me to look for more balance by giving up one magical player for a number of solid players. The rest, as they say, is history. Westbrook only scored 11 points for Karen last night. Tee Hee Hee!
So kids, what is the lesson learned here by this exciting underdog, David vs. Goliath victory? I imagine it involves a number of cliches, like “don’t ever give up” or “it’s not over, until it’s over,” but I fear for me it probably means that I should listen to Steve more often. Shhhh, don’t tell him I said that!
First—Congratulations! Did you get to pick out the costume for your team? (Hee Hee).
Second—So many lessons on so many levels, but let’s start with what not to put on a trophy from a sorority/bar contest!
You make me laugh!!! Love you!
No! Strangely enough, costume selection (the boys call them uniforms) is not part of fantasy football! What’s up with that?
For those of you who don’t get it, Jenn is teasing me because being both a sports mom AND a theatre mom, I sometimes get things a little mixed up, as in “Brooke, is your soccer costume clean?” Steve is understandably mortified by this activity attire confusion 🙂
And, I am still not commenting on my first trophy!
Oh, you will SO regret baiting us with the first trophy tidbit!! I feel confident that we will break you down!!!
Congrats on your win, by the way. My house full of boys is full of fantasy football talk all the time; it never occurred to me to join in with them!
Show off!
