God: Come with me by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest.
Me: I just got up. I don’t need rest, I need coffee. Have you seen my to-do list?
God: Abide in me. Taste and see that I am good.
Me: I know you are good, but I have a really full day. We’ll talk later, I promise.
God: Start your day with me. I have everything you need for your busy day. I promise it will be worth it.
Some days, I sit with God and it feels like my voice is bouncing off the wall. Does anyone hear my prayers? I flip through the pages of this ancient book and wonder if any of this applies to my life now. Do these words written so many years ago, words sometimes used as a weapon to wound, have meaning and purpose in today’s world?
Yet, after years of drinking from this well, I know my time with God at the beginning of my day is LIFE for me. It is my daily bread. Being here now is indeed worth it.
When I start my day with God, my heart is more tender, my vision softer, my spirit more willing. As God pours His Spirit into me, I am better equipped to be poured out in ways I don’t always understand, the mystery of our faith unfolding as it has for centuries before me.
Although I don’t always understand the intricacies of how the rituals of my faith work, I have come to believe they matter. Showing up in this sacred space matters. Click To Tweet Even on the days when I walk away seemingly empty-handed, I know for certain this time is never wasted. Sitting here in this chair, bible and journal open in my lap, I am changed in ways I don’t always understand. In these moments, I am fed, nourished, renewed, energized and sent out.
Yes Father, it is SO worth it. And yes, I love you too.

Hi I’m your neighbor at #FMF today. My days are so, so much better when I start them with Him. Most mornings I do.
What a lovely description of the best way to start a day! You’ve got a literary breath of fresh morning air here, birdsong included. Such a gift to us!
#1 at FMF this week.

Great post! Sounds like you and I have the same conversations with God! Starting my day with some devotional time is my goal, and one that I don’t always accomplish. I believe it was John Wesley who said something like “I have so much to do today; I must spend the first hour in prayer.” I am trying to apply that to my life, but it requires a daily renewal of my commitment.
I love this. Soaking in time with our Father. I have learned through the years that time in the morning is precious & dear and without it I am not equipped for the day. I’m more short with my kids and feel more provoked. Thank you for sharing from your heart. – love from FMF friend
Love this post! So on it and yes so very worth it. I always feel so full of life when I start my day with God and usually out of sorts when I don’t. Thanks for reminding us to always cherish this time and make Him our number on priority.
